Vivekananda documented the encounter himself in a letter dated February 13, 1896 — the single most reliable primary source we have. In it, he wrote that Tesla was "charmed" to hear about the Vedantic concepts of:

• Prana — universal energy or life-force
• Akasha — the subtlest form of matter, roughly analogous to "ether"
• Kalpas — vast cosmic cycles of time

Tesla reportedly believed he could mathematically demonstrate that force and matter were both reducible to potential energy — an idea strikingly close to what Vedantic cosmology had proposed centuries earlier. Whether Tesla ever completed that mathematical proof is unclear; no equation survives, and no follow-up letter announced a breakthrough. But the influence lingered: in a 1907 essay published after his death, Tesla explicitly used the Sanskrit terms Akasha and Prana to describe the origin of matter.

So the throughline is genuine: a scientist obsessed with unlocking limitless, wireless energy sat down with a monk who described a philosophy built entirely around the idea of infinite, underlying energy. But tucked among the clutter was a Buddhist Vajra Dorje, which observers quickly identified and connected back to Indra's mythic thunderbolt.

Musk never commented on the object's symbolism — his only follow-up remark was a joke about needing coasters. So we genuinely don't know why it's there, or what it means to him personally. It could be a meaningful object. It could be a curio someone gave him. It could just be a striking piece of art he liked.

Here's the honest answer: there isn't a documented, causal chain linking Tesla's meeting with Vivekananda, the Vajra's mythology, and Musk's choice to keep one on his nightstand. Musk has never said the object relates to Tesla's spiritual philosophy or to his own company's name. No source connects the three directly.

What does exist is a compelling thematic parallel:

Three separate expressions of the same underlying human fascination — energy that never runs out — arriving from science, from myth, and from modern industry.
